Says it all really. I was Valedictorian in high school with a 4.000 GPA, then went on to study Computer Science at University. I also now hold a second degree in Biological Sciences, and that is with top first class honours as well. I'm now 38 years old and what is my job?

I do manual labour on a farm, part-time for minimum wage. Before that I was a security guard on a building site also for minimum wage. Nobody in academia or science will employ me, it seems that I'm "over qualified".

What a waste. Maybe I should have dropped out like all these other people did.....

[...] College destroys the most productive and entrepreneurial years of a persons life. The original point of college was not to teach someone about underwater basket weaving. It was originally intended to train individuals to think outside of the box and to lead. Now students must spend hours studying topics that they will never use in real life, just to pass their classes. Students are also given schedules that allow for very little free time aside from class and studying. Once again the excuse is used that students become mischievous and troublesome when given too much free time. The consequences of keeping intelligent and motivated people out of the real world is that revolutionary new ideas are kept hidden within the university. So is it any coincidence that a vast number of billionaires were college dropouts? [...]

U.S.A. is falling behind many other countries in the graduation of engineers (especially engineers who are citizens of U.S.A). Why? Could there be a relationship between the opportunity to have financially successful careers without formal education, or with formal education in many other less disciplined areas such as political science, business etc. ? Should we find a way to attract more students into engineering? How?

Most of these "billionaires" are actually fronts for the so called "old money" of 19th century Germany. Read history to learn more. It's not really their money they made - like J.P. Morgan, about 15% of his listed wealth was actually his.
Not that it makes much difference to them, but.. stay in the college.

As an addendum to this list, click my name for one. A list of famous and infamous high school dropouts. Though just names, you can always google for more information about each, I suppose...but one is exceptionally important to remember, ESPECIALLY if you've ever had any sort of lethal or previously terminal illness in your life, EVER. Aaaand this would be...:
Anton van Leeuwenhoek....Dutch microscope maker; world's first microbiologist; discoverer of bacteria, blood cells, and sperm cells).
Billionaire? No, but possibly far more important, especially to the octagenarians that made the list.

Other noteworthy examples:
Marcus Loew........self-made multimillionaire American businessman; early Hollywood pioneer; founder of the "Loews" movie- theater chain; co-founder of "MGM" studios (elementary school dropout).
Mary Lyon.........American women's education pioneer; early American teacher; founder of Mount Holyoke College (America's first women's college).
Brooke Astor........wealthy American socialite-philanthropist-author; Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient
John Jacob Astor......self-made multimillionaire German-born early American businesssman; America's first multimillionaire.
Agatha Christie......best-selling British author; bestowed the rank of Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the year 1971 (United Kingdom: Dame Agatha Christie) (no formal education; home schooling/life experience; studied singing and piano at age 16).
Thomas Edison.......self-made multimillionaire American inventor; electrical power usage pioneer; filmmaker; Congressional Gold Medal recipient; knighted (France: first bestowed the rank of Chevalier [Knight], then later upgraded to Officer, then Commander; Commander [or Cmdr.] Thomas Edison) (elementary school dropout).
(mostly posted because I'm sure most even moderately familiar with him didn't know he was knighted.)
Benjamin Franklin....American politician-diplomat-author-printer-publisher-scientist-inventor; co-author and co-signer of the U.S. Declaration of Independence; one of the founders of The United States of America; face is pictured on the U.S. one-hundred dollar bill (little formal education [less than two years]; home schooling/life experience).
Harry Houdini.....magician; escape artist; paranormal investigator; Hungarian-born American author.
Soichiro Honda......self-made multimillionaire Japaneses businessman; motorcycle industry pioneer; founder of the Honda Motor Company.
H.L. Hunt........self-made billionaire American oil industrialist (elementary school dropout).
John Paul Jones.....Scottish-born American Revolutionary War U.S. navy commander; famous quote: "I have not yet begun to fight." (little formal education; home schooling/life experience; went to sea in his youth.)
Florence Melton.....American inventor-businesswoman- philanthropist; inventor of the foam-lined slipper and removable shoulder pad.
Herman Melville....best-selling American author (Moby Dick, etc.).
Sam Phillips.......rock-and-roll music industry pioneer; founder of Sun Records in Memphis, Tennessee in 1952; music producer- talent scout credited with discovering Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, etc; Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee; American author.
George Washington....1st U.S. President; former general; Chairman of the Constitutional Convention; U.S. nickname: "The Father of Our Country"; face is pictured on the U.S. one dollar bill and twenty-five cent coin (quarter) (no formal education; home schooling/life experience; went to sea in his youth).

And here's two other billionaires for the list.
Kjell Inge Rokke.....self-made billionaire Norwegian businessman.
Edmond Safra.......Lebanese-born billionaire banker-philanthropist.
John D. Rockefeller Sr.....self-made billionaire American businessman-philanthropist; co-founder of "The Standard Oil Company"; history's first recorded billionaire (dropped out of high school two months before graduation; took business courses for ten weeks at Folsom Mercantile College [a chain business school]).
And a little something for the leftists in the crowd too. :Þ

Kaba Gandhi.......father of Indian political leader Mohandas "Mathatma" Gandhi (no formal education; home schooling/life experience).
Karasandas Gandhi.....older brother of Indian political leader Matahma Gandhi (left school when he and his brother were married to girls in arranged marriages; his brother, the future political leader returned to school a year later at age 14).
Mohandas "Mathatma" Gandhi....Indian political and spirital leader (left school at age 13 when he got married to a girl, also 13, in a marriage arranged by his parents, as was the custom; later returned and finished high school and went on to receive a university education.

Gates didn't drop out of Harvard, he was kicked out, for the same sleaziness that made him a billionaire in industry. Course, things have come full circle now: he donated a lot of cash to Harvard for a new computer science buidling (in which I used to work) and then they gave him an honarary degree. Just goes to show that a Harvard degree isn't one of those things that money can't buy.

Some would say that it gives hope to some of us. Ok, but as aApe does, I notice that there is no exemple of self-made women. Not weird, but too bad would I say. We just need to look for those women and mention them : they surely exist.

It is a mistake to “credit” Bill Gates with “dropping out” of Harvard. He did not. He was expelled from Harvard for improperly using the school’s computer systems for personal business. He was warned multiple times and eventually expelled. The only evidence I have for this story is Prof. Fischer. Fischer taught an Intro to Communications class to me when I was in High School at Boston College. He was at Harvard during the tenure of Gates and claimed to be personally familiar with the situation invloving the library computers.
